VOLUNTEERS

Volunteer Profile

Volunteers are usually parents themselves or have parenting experience. They will undertake the 8 day Course of Preparation before being matched with a family from the waiting list.
All volunteers are required to provide 2 personal referees and undertake an Enhanced Criminals Record Check.

Volunteer Training

Accredited through the National Open College Network, Levels 1 & 2

Training takes place over 8 weeks and covers the following topics:

Week 1:
Induction day
Find out about the Preparation Course and see if volunteering for Home-Start is right for you

Week 2:
Introduction to the Course
Volunteering for Home-Start (Part A)

Week 3:
Volunteering for Home-Start (Part B)
Being a Home-Start Volunteer

Week 4:
Values & Attitudes
Examining how our attitudes shape our relationships
Parents & their children
Looking at various aspects of parenting

Week 5:
Listening & confidentiality
Highlighting active listening skills and understand Home-Start’s confidentiality policy

Week 6
Safeguarding & child protection
Looking at child protection procedures

Week 7:
Richard Paccitti from Mind
Discussing support for families experiencing mental health issues
Family life & supporting parents
How to support families experiencing domestic abuse and bereavement

Week 8:
MESH training
Learning about Home-Start’s administrative system
Representative from the Citizens’ Advice Bureau
Discussing relevant family support and information services
Endings

Volunteer Support

We offer

3 support sessions a year. A time to share experiences with the rest of the volunteer team.
Ongoing training sessions
Supervision & annual appraisal
Out of pocket expenses.
Social events in summer and at Christmas
